a little but urgent help on a unix function

hi all, i searched through the net but cant find anything, my problem is from a defined file , call it king.mdf, i just want to copy all the lines separetely to variables , for example i find by -wc command the number of lines in the king.mdf and then i construct an string array (how can u help) with call the array a[i], the crucial part is how can i copy the i'th line of the file to the a[i] entry of the array

Arrays in the shell aren't really portable. What shell are you using? bash? korn?
