Answer: Lacks plausible deniability for why the product doesn't work and it would assign who is required to fix it under warranty.

Actually, the reason is that if MS got into selling computers they would have violated their contracts with the partners that do sell computers.... It would create an unfair market condition and the competition would scream foul. Then they could not get anyone else to sell their software pre-installed on a computer.
A monopoly then is created and it now becomes illegal to be M$ and could be forced to dissolve....which the competition will push to the max....this is the same reasoning that Microsoft lost in the browser wars in trying to force the only browser to be IE that could be used with the operating system...

Instead of asking "Why doesn't Microsoft make computers?", why not ask "Why doesn't Dell/Sony/HP/Lenovo make an operating system?"

I know there are a few PC manufactures out there that ship "custom" operating systems on their computers, but these are usually just a re-skinned linux distribution.

As far as I can tell, Apple is the only company that makes both hardware and software (at least in the home user market).

Actually they have shipped no browser operating systems to other places as well before this.

This is good as it frees the resources of having to manipulate between using IE or any other browser and allows the owner to make the choice as to which one he prefers.

Now if they would do the same for the crappy media player application as well!

I believe you can already pull any unwanted stuff out of Win2000/XP using programs like nLite.

lI don't think removing IE is a good idea. Some of you may recall when third party browsers were sold. We could end up back with that setup again.

The only reason FF is free is because no one would buy it as long as IE is there.
