Hello,
Welcome to The Lounge section of Computing.Net. This is a section where members can talk to each other about anything they like. It is not a place to ask technical questions. Technical questions will be removed. Everything else is OK. However, flame wars or inflammatory comments will be removed.
Have fun and thank you for using Computing.Net!
JustinP.S. I know this feature had been recommended to me before. Everyone can thank BestOfMedia for encouraging me to finally make the dive!

Well, I guess I have the distinction of being the first member to post on this new forum.
I thought an appropriate thread might be why computer users don't understand their computer is not in the same category as their TV.
I have been posting at CN for some time and still don't understand why supposedly intelligent people can't understand that a computer is a complicated piece of hardware.
They expect it to work flawlessly all the time.
Don't get me started on the lack of backing up personal data.
I am pretty sure every member that assists others here gets frustrated with this these issues.
The question that begs to be answered is "how can we educate the masses"?

"The question that begs to be answered is "how can we educate the masses"?"
You can't. Look around and you'll notice that in every aspect, things that seem like "common sense" aren't common at all.

Agreed. I made a house call last evening for, "my printer won't work!". After depressing the "on" button it functioned quite well.

Combine that with the desire by most for instant gratification or miracles and the desire to absolutely do no research or work to solve a problem.
Anyway, my thanks to the few who post complete system specs with their appeals for help. Makes me happy some out there can still use their heads.

The question that begs to be answered is "how can we educate the masses"?
[/QUOTE]In order to "educate the masses", we'd need a teaching method that is completely idiot-proof. However, developing such a method would require the ability to think like a complete idiot. That "skill" is rarely possessed by anyone with enough intelligence to see the need to "educate the masses".
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

OtheHill: The question that begs to be answered is "how can we educate the masses"?
The real question is, "Should we educate the masses," and the answer is, "No."Look, half of my family is involved in the medical profession. They all think I should (at least) know basic human anatomy. While I don't deny such knowledge would be beneficial, I just don't care how my arms work so long as they do.
Unless you're talking about people who post for help, and then get upset when the fix requires more effort than some stranger waving his magic Wand of Free Tech Support. But that's a different issue entirely.
tl;dr: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

Thanks Justin for the new forum.
To all the others...you can only help those that ask for the help and it must be kept to the specifics or they will dispise you for interfering with their lives.
It is the disadvantaged who habitually elect Democrats on the belief of personal change---
yet they remain disadvantaged.

^People clearly think computers are appliances when they're not.

Computers aren't appliances.

cause they need maintenance and are in an ever changing state, and are also way too sophisticated to be referred to as an appliance.
Look up 'appliance' on wikipedia. Comparing a computer to a toaster just doesn't work.

Intel 80486: Comparing a computer to a toaster just doesn't work.
Of course not. That's just as absurd as comparing a toaster to a TV or refrigerator. What's your point?

I have to agree with Intel on this point. IMHO a computer can't be considered to be an appliance, as much as Bestbuy, etc. would have you believe.
The learning curve to use and maintain is not on par with even programming a VCR.

Exactly my point. Appliances are mundane applications specific to one task, or maybe a few if they're really sophisticated. Computers are certainly not mundane, and even relatively old ones can do a whole plethora of things. And to make it do more, you expand it, install a new piece of software, or learn a new skill. What can you do to a toaster? Turn the heat knob up and down?! My point is that computers are far too sophisticated to be called an appliance, and with that sophistication comes way more maintenance and skill required to use it.
You don't have tech support companies for toasters, refridgerators and televisions, like you do for computers.
My original point was to back up OTheHill's post about how people just expect computers to 'work' like an appliance, without regular maintenance or skill required.

This reminded me of something, My 65 year-old computer illeiterate Grandmother phoned me one day and said, "My computer wont turn on." I asked her to check that there were green lights on ther front, she said there was one on over a little picture of a plug... I told her to press the power button. A few seconds later I heard a Oh its on!
I only Batch if possible, 2000 more lines of code, oh well.

So, your argument is what? Some people are too intimidated to turn it on, so it isn't a household appliance? 'Cause that says more about the people in your family than the technology.

No, it was a funny experience that I thought I would share with you, and I don't think you comment about my family was warranted.
I only Batch if possible, 2000 more lines of code, oh well.

Aww shame, Razor disagrees.
