Is District 9 something worth braving long lines, sticky faux leather seats with an oversized bucket of stale popcorn glistening with squirts of some dubious butter-flavored yellow gloop and H1N1, or is this something that should be tossed in the Netflix queue? Don't forget to factor in the equation the home theater advantage of a cleaner loo (absent are the urinals with dubious yellow gloop that are definitely not butter-flavored). Did anyone crack all questions, including the differential equation, on the site before the movie went out?

Is THIS what you are talking about? If so I haven't read Alive in Joburg from which District 9 is based on and I cannot answer your off-the-wall question.

That's a relative question.
I can't think of much of anything that would convince me to brave the crowds and expense of going to a theater when I have a nice home theatre and all the luxuries and conveniences of home....

Watched it on my PC week before last, it's okay & if you are into documentaries, you'd probably like it.
To directly address your inquiry, I can't say if it's worth going to the movies for because I go to the movies not so much for the movie playing but the movie-going experience. I'd seen movies that sucked and had a great movie time & conversely seen a great movie & a so so entertainment outing.

I've seen it 3 times...got it thru the torrents a day or 2 after it was released. It's a cam version but as cams go, pretty decent. Human dialog is in english, alien dialog is in Russian subtitles with english subs laid over them.
Excellent movie in a documentary/news like format. Here's a review:

If you're inclined to download it, get the
maxspeed{1337x}-Noir version...it's almost DVD quality.

Don't have a home theater system. However I do have a bathroom I am not scared to enter, a pause button on the dvd player, a kitchen the cooks me what I want for under $14 a head and if I want popcorn I get it with butter not butter like flavoring. The wife and I went to see the latest Fast and The Furious after it came out. We went to an early showing so there wasn't a crowd. We didn't eat like hogs and still spent over $30. I'll wait 'til this one makes the movie of the week.

Practice makes perfect but only if you practice perfectly!

@XpUser - yep, that's what I'm talking about.
@Sabertooth - Documentaries can be sonorous...but I've seen some really good ones like--"The King of Kong".
@Jam - Three times...what did you like most about it?
All, there are just some films better seen on the big screen, and I'm wondering if this is one of them.

"Three times...what did you like most about it?"
This particular movie was not what I expected. Usually after I download a movie file, I spot check it for quality. When I began checking this one, I honestly thought I'd downloaded the wrong file because of the documentary style. It peaked my curiousity so I watched it almost immediately, then I watched it with my daughter & then again with a friend of mine (not all in the same day). The review in response 5 contains a pretty good explanation of the plot & leaves out just enough so as not to spoil the ending. It was a love story?
I wouldn't say this is necessarily a movie that MUST be seen on the big screen, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. I would classify Transformers as big screener though...a lot of action & special effects which are really brought out with the theater surround sound, not to mention Megan Fox in all her glory. Damn, I love the way the woman says "camshaft"...lol.
And here's a shameless plug for a celebrity interview/movie review site that I visit semi-regularly: No Good TV - Putting the F-U back into FUN
Enjoy! ;-)

BTW, I'd like to share a couple of my recent negative experiences at the local theaters....
1. someone pulled a fire alarm & the theater had to be evacuated. Theater personel knew that it was a prank, but the fire dept responded automatically. We weren't allowed back into the theater until the fire chief gave the "all clear". All the while, the movies kept running. The whole fiasco lasted about 20 minutes & when I finally returned to my seat, I saw the final few minutes & closing credits. The manager explained that if they stopped showing all the films, it would have thrown off the entire schedule for the rest of the evening. He did offer a free pass to anyone who wanted one though.
2. an African-American woman sitting in the row in front of me got a call on her cell during the movie. Rather than just turning it off, she answered the call & began shouting at the caller - "didn't I tell you I was going to the moovies? Why is you calling me? I told you not to call while I was at da moovies! You gonna get it when I get home!" And then when a few people "shushed" her, she went off on them - "don't be shushing me! Who does you think you are shushing me like dat?"
And in addition to the above, there always seems to be a group of unruly kids who come in late & talk loudly, the constant rustle of popcorn bags & candy bar wrappers, the glow of cell phone screens, etc.

I distinctively remember one movie-going experience where the ambiance included people in audience throwing pickles at the screen. Yes, drippy green pickles! Since when did the movies start imitating the show Blue Man Group where you need ponchos to sit in the front row seats?
