This is just a opinion, but I'm glad I made the switch to go with Playstation 3 gaming instead of making a gaming computer.

It just made sense to me at least (note: @ three years back) to choose the PS3 over a gaming computer.

The (+) of PS3:
+ 8 core processors on it; the most was 4 core on pc
+ Price paid = $325 on a 40gb PS3; I don't think I could of built a decent gaming computer under $400 (Maybe more like $550-650)
+ Plays Blu-rays
+ Small size, sleek
+ Internet connectivity, the PSN (playstation network)
+ Growing library of games (most are not dedicated to only PS3, but exclusive to gaming consoles); More developers design games for consoles.; Sorry PC maybe you will get a port of this game
+ And most importantly: Largely Trouble Free gaming; I had my PS3 replaced due to a disc drive malfunction, because it was not reading any disc media. I had to RMA my console, and it took over a month after sending it twice back for repairs (It was free under warranty, but slow).

The (-) of PS3:
+ My 40gb hd is getting full, but I can buy a larger one
+ the fan is loud when it comes on (I'm hoping it's just a summer seasonal thing)
+ you have to pay for the games; this is a new concept for me coming from teh pc
+ no mods for games

All you mention is true. That said, the hard drive size is puny by today's standards. Add to that the fact that you can't play any games that aren't ported to the PS3 and you still need a computer. At least most people do.

Any time you have a dedicated piece of equipment it usually can perform that task better than a multi-use device.

The positive about owning a console over a pc is that you won't have to worry about making sure all of your hardware meets a certain games specs or worrying about what setting you have to put the game on so can get decent frame rates like you do with a pc.

I mostly play the 2D consoles (Sega Genesis/Nintendo SNES and down, mostly), so a PC works perfectly for me.

I'm not entirely sure the point of this topic, though. You're either happy with your purchase, or you're not. It's a done deal; don't tell me you're having regrets?

ejunky,

Most gamers stick with a platform out of preference & not so much out of superiority. The other thing is, you really can't use a linear comparison to determine the better platform between those two.

Remember the PS3 is a gaming console & the PC is well, a personal computer. It is like comparison a hair clipper to a pair of scissors. Also the cell processor is not the same CPU that you'd find in a PC, so the 8 core superiority is not exactly a plus. You can find a more detailed breakdown of the cell processor on the web & you'll see why the PS3 is arguable good at the one thing that it's made for. Now, things would be different if I can swap my work PC for a PS3 ... but nothing'll get done at work.
