So the Delta Air Lines / Northwest Airlines pilots who were out of communication with air traffic controllers and their airline for over an hour and who overshot their scheduled landing by 150 miles and ended up in an entirely different destination (Wisconsin instead of Minneapolis) are blaming their use of laptops and denying that they fell asleep. Apparently, there isn't a law that bans the use of electronics like laptops by commercial pilots when the plane is above 10,000 feet in the air. Do you think that if there was such a rule, this mishap could have been prevented?

Didn't they at first say they were arguing? I mite be way wrong but I think they used the laptop as a coverup for what they were really doing in the cockpit. Let the NTSB & FAA dig deeper into it by first inject them with truth serum.

OK I will spill the hint - it's a fact that falling in love makes people do crazy things and the cockpit with its door locked provided the perfect opportunity and in that time they forgot they were responsible for 140 passengers riding in the back...LOL

re: ended up in an entirely different state (Wisconsin instead of Minneapolis)
errr...Hate to nitpick (not I don't!) but Minneapolis isn't a state.

@DerbyDad03
Whoops, thanks for the correction--duly noted and processed (changed state to destination).
On second thought, perhaps I should have left 'entirely different state' and added 'refreshed versus sleepy' instead.

On a totally unrelated note - other than the fact that air travel and the wrong state were involved - here's a cute story...
I know of about 30 exchange students from Greece who ended up in an entirely different state (Minnesota instead of New York) because the trip coordinator on the Greece end didn't know that there is a difference between the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) and the Rochester International Airport (RST).

Now I truly understand why I am not allowed to use my cell on the plane. Apparently it cuts into the bandwidth they need to put out wwww.nottystewardess.com .
Or maybe it was www.howtoflyafreakinplane.com .
LikelyI want to go like my grandfather did. Peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming at the top of my lungs like the passengers in his car.

I had heard that explanation too...perhaps they were in a heated conversation over Mac versus PC.
ROFLMAO!

Per the NTSB, both pilots have filed appeals against the FAA's decision to revoke their licenses. Do these pilots really think that they are innocent and deserve to fly commercially again? Who would hire them even if they won their appeal? And what is the basis of the appeal,"The laptop made me do it?"

re: Who would hire them even if they won their appeal
...any passenger that got the extra 150 mile plane ride at no additional cost.
Such a bargain!

I would really like to knowho hires them. Granted I don't fly, I haven't in more than 5 years. However I would be more than all to happy investing a little time to inform those that do. I thought pricelines plan was bad because you couldn't pick your seat or what time you flew, but, wherever they end up you can't pick you destination.

Did the passangers get extra frequent flyer miles for this trip?
Likely

Even if they did, how likely are they to fly on that airline again?
I'd sure have second thoughts.

And if or when they use those miles can they go where they want or do they have to go where the laptop takes them?

On a different, but similar note...it's been all over the news about the arrest of the United pilot in London who was supposed to fly a Boeing 767 from Heathrow to Chicago O'Hare airport. Luckily for those passengers, a United employee blew the whistle on the pilot.
