This image describes the attitude of the three platforms very well.

-Windows is boring and can feel like a chore
-Mac has done most of the work for you already and it usually hums along nicely
-Linux is for the enthusiasts who prefer their own custom-built monstrosity.

I prefer my own custom built monstrosity, and use Vista. Windows isnt exactly boring and since win 2000 haven't felt it was a chore.

Linux I feel is a chore. I think its cool and like tinkering with it, but I cant use it for any 'everyday' tasks for the life of me. I'm fine with the mac O/S but I really dont like the hardware, its all about looking flash but not really good to use. WHY oh WHY the hell is the power button on the back..
Whats with the thin keyboards, I have a nice big curved keyboard which is much better to use.

I'd say this topic has been thoroughly beaten and immaturely fought about on other forums.

I like Windows the best, but only because it has more support, and I know loads more about it than Mac or Linux.

I like Mac, but I wish I could use it more. I don't own a mac, and the last time I used one was 2 years ago when my Grade 7 homeroom at school had an iMac with OS 10, and my Grade 6 Health teacher had an LCII with System 7.5.

I like Linux, but i'm discouraged because doing more technical things is so much different than Windows. When I had Mepis installed on my Compaq Presario, just trying to install FireFox 3 from a TAR.GZ archive was so irritating, and the page I found on the internet that explained how to install programs from TAR.GZ files only frustrated me more. 2 full pages talked about compiling and having to make separate folders and running certain files in certain programs... I gave up! With archives in Windows, you just have to extract all of the files/folders to one folder, click on SETUP.EXE, and boom, you're all set to go! There isn't even a dedicated setup/install program with Linux archives... or is there? FireFox is all I tried.

I think Linux is nice looking and fun to use, but I just don't find it easy to do anything more than running the built-in programs and games.

I have Windows 2000 Pro on my Compaq, now.

Just my 2 cents,

-Trent

I have Windows 2000 on my laptop too Trent. It's apparently 'designed for XP' but 2000 runs on here much better than XP ever did... and I generally prefer the OS.

As long as it does the job, why complain so much? Fanboys annoy me :(

The only thing I hate about 2000 is the lack of Movie Maker. Otherwise, I like it just as much as I like XP.

My Compaq Presario was built for Windows 98, but it runs 2000 just as good, if not better!

Windows 2000 and XP manage resources much better than 98 does. I think that in a lot of cases 2000 runs faster than 98. The only operating system that Microsoft made that I didnt like was Win 95. I like tinkering in 3.11 every now and then too.

hi
heres a question for mac & pc users alike,
(i know little about imacs osx & just saw their spec)
a friend has just bought a imac for graphic design cs3 master photoshop , now this cost about a £1000 excluding the software , now i know there is a cs3 master pshop for pc's some what cheaper and as he already has a decent vista based pc ,,id suggested upgrading the ram and processor as its a somwhat vastly cheaper option than buying a mac , but heres the crux

is it true, "he's told" that cs3 master photoshop runs better on a mac and thats why graphic designers use them in preference?

I too have found that Windows 2000 runs far better than 98... and XP.

I actually really like Windows 95, it's 98 that I never liked!

In my opinion, Windows ME was the number-one, worst, most unstable version of Windows Microsoft ever developed. Everything i've read and heard days so.

I tried Windows Me on the Compaq once. It was error city until I reformmated the HD and installed Windows 2000 7 hours later. Since then I have never had a problem.

Other then that, I think every other version of Windows was great.

I especially like Windows 3.x. I'm a sucker for the Program Manager. Unfortunately, I don't have a computer old enough to run it (lol), so I run it in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 on my Windows XP computer.

My most favorite version of Windows, though, is Windows NT 3.51. It was the very last version of Windows using the 3.x interface.

Cool, I didn't know Windows 2000 came with Program Manager. I thought Windows 98 was the last one.

I'm 99.99% sure its BS,Hell macs are pretty dang similar to PC's now anyways and use the same Intel processors. Maby the OS might manage the hardware better which indirectly improves Photo Shops performance. I think there is a lot of "Professionals use Macs so I should too" goin on.

I think Macs are much more of an image thing now anyways. I really want to build a nice fast PC and put OS X on it so I can get the best of both worlds.

Windows XP even comes with program manager, however whenever I double clicked it, it wouldn't open.

I've read that it would work on Vanilla XP and XP SP1, but on installing SP2 or higher, it was rendered useless, and would just exhibit the dreaded 'half second hourglass' when you clicked it.

Microsoft apparently kept it there for 'legacy reasons'... much like 3/4 of the system files that date back to well before XP's release...

"I am not fond of getting a mac, they are over priced. "

I have had arguments about this with an avid MAC user before. But I still think they are overpriced!

For $798 I got an Asus Laptop with:
15" wide screen
Pentium T2390
2GB of RAM
Win Vista Home Premium
Lightscreibe DVD burner
160GB HDD
ATI X1100 Graphics
2MP inbuilt webcam.

I think you'd be hard up finding a MAC of similar specs. An argument is that 'Its not a full package and cant do anything with it'

Meh, stuff the package. I want to choose my own software and most of the software I use is free anyways. The only extra money I have spent on it was $40 for another 2GB of ram which I didn't really need.

They aren't overpriced, when you compare the fact that...

the hardware in most Macs is almost always way better than that of your average 'bargain bucket' PC;

Unlike most PC's, they don't come loaded with crap and junkware, and increasingly nowadays, spyware;

They don't get viruses very often, so newbies don't have to worry about that;

The support you get from Apple is pretty decent.

They look sexy...

Macs and PC's are excellent each in their own way.

I think that for someone who has never used a computer at all, a Mac would be a good choice. Too bad I never thought of that when Dad was buying his computer (He got a Windows Laptop.) He is still pondering whether he should press the Left mouse button or the Right mouse button. After a couple of weeks, he managed to learn how to open solitaire.
