This is my take on the subject, please correct me if I am wrong in any point

The newly elected government in Australia are going to trial internet censorship at the ISP level.

The main aim, it seems, is to prevent access to illegal pornagraphy and prevent the Australian youth accessing sexually explicit material.

During the election period, voters were made aware that internet censorship (this was of course over-shadowed by much larger issues) was on the cards, but there was to be an opt out clause. This appears to be no longer the case, and the censored material has been modified to include any subject matter deemed unacceptable.

Needless to say this has become the topic of raging debate.

While we all want to see unacceptable material wiped from existence, who deems material unnacceptable? (with the exceptions to the obvious).

Will unacceptable material include anti-government sentiments from a random blogger?

Keywords will be used... How will this affect, lets say, Breast Cancer Australia or any business listed online with a deemed inappropriate keyword?

If blacklisted how do they get removed?

Will online business suffer?

These are the types of questions that to date haven't been answered yet.

I.T. experts have predicted that the filtering machanism used will slow internet speeds (HTTP traffic) by 20%. This is in a country that is already lacking in high speed communications technology (fiber technology to be shortly implemented to a broader area)

For me, I believe if you can access material without the need for the internet it shouldn't be censored, whether it be from the news agent, library or even from the media (All government legislated).

I think the government here has a can of worms that they are just about to open...

what are other peoples thoughts on internet censorship?

As an afterthought I have included the link to the podcast on Triple M with Spoonman discussing internet censorship last night:

I don't believe in any of it.

As for the kiddies it should be up to the parents to either control them or teach them properly and not up to the government.

Nor do I believe in age grouping as I know 9 and 10 year olds that are more mature than some 40 year olds....

It is all an individual/parental thing and the government needs to keep their ass out of it!

The newly elected govenment have been in power for a year. Get your facts right.

Teh Labor government do not have a working majority in the Senate, and have to rely on the two independent senators to get anything passed. One who is from the religous freakin right Family First Party (Seventh Day Adventists I think) the other one is some Greek tosser Nick Xenophon with a chip on his shoulder. So they have to accept some shi_tty deals this is one of them.

Don't complain on a french website about it coz it mean carp to the majority of users heer.

Complain on whirlpool.net.au forums make your voice heard there.

Well excuse me!

When I used the term "newly", I used it in reference to how long the coalition were in power. So as far as I am concerned Labor is the newly elected government. Don't bother debating use of words which are obscure to the subject matter.

And secondly, excuse me for posting the subject of internet censorship on a computing forum, did it ever occur to you soupnasty that I may be seeking a broader opinion? It may now be a french site, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it has an international flavour of visitors and regulars.

It irks me that you sit there trying to represent yourself as the voice for the people... the people have a voice. And if they aren't interested in reading the post, the resolution is easy. They don't have to be told not to.

Who are you to dictate where I post in regards to I.T. topics? Get over yourself.

Learn to articulate what you read, no-where in my thread have I whined about internet censorship, all I ask for is opinions.

As far as whining about what our mandarin speaking prime minister is implementing, I'm sure you'll do enough for us both at whirlpool.

Usually I keep out of arguments, but soupnasty your arguing like a 13 year old...

As for internet censorship, I doubt it will get far. Net nanny is good for family's, and the Police are good for tracking offenders who view or post illegal content. Police are certainly becoming much better at stopping 'cyber crime' and I'm sure they will get better.

Not that I think my political preferences are the scope of the discussion, or more so, any of your business, I voted Labor. I voted Labor at every turn of the screw. I voted Labor Beasely, I voted Labor Latham and I voted Labor Rudd.

I did not like little Johnnie, nor did I like his smug cronies. I did not like his policies and the introduction and implimentation of Work Choices for me was a slap in the face.

I am pleased Labor is in power, but this a very dissapointing turn of events. I view this as a meltdown of our liberal democratic rights, and is bordering on communist like restrictive measure.

I hope you don't go about all over the place spouting your views without knowing the full facts. It would embarrass most Labor supporters.

Actually btk1w1 I have to agree with your sentiments. I sit on the other side of the fence (politically speaking) but regardless of whichever government is in power censorship is an infringement on free speech. The Beijing Olympics were a prime example of this.

How unfortunate that soupnasty should let loose with such vitriol. I have always respected his opinions on this forum but this behaviour reflects badly on the character of the man

Cheers Ewen,

It was unfortunate that this thread took that angry little slant. It was never my intention to broadcast my political views and for that I apologise for any offence.

I posted here because I have been visiting here for years and appreciate and value the opinions and advice given.

lurkswithin said it is up to parents to educate and control what children are exposed to. I couldn't agree more. In the 80's we had latch key kids, is the false sense of security of a clean feed going to mean we are going to see pc baby sitting in the 2010's?

Mattwizz said that he doesn't think it will get far... I hope he is right. The federal police are very good at weeding out the undesireables that peddle and distribute illegal garbage over the internet. If the censorship takes place will it drive them further underground and make their apprehension that much more difficult?

I believe there are people that agree with a clean feed and I would welcome and respect their opinion.

I really wasn't too worried about the pre-election stance when the filtering only applied to material of a pornographic nature, but post-election when the subject matter was emended to include "subject matter deemed...", this became a real concern.

I just hope it isn't a sign of things to come.

Perhaps if you had referred to the American equivalent of our Labor and Liberal you would have had better response. Our political system is a bit hard to understand to the average outsider but generally similar principles apply to whichever political party whatever the label as I am sure the Americans are about to find out.
