Hi all,

This week's poll question is about Microsoft's decision to continue to support IE6. Discuss here what you think support for this old browser, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

I guess it is a good thing. Like many I am old and do not usually like change. Tabed browsing gives me a headache so I stuck with IE 6 as long as I could and liked it. Never did care for Firefox when it started and didn't expiriment around a lot. I can't speak to the troubles others have had with IE as I have had none other than when I went from IE 3 to IE 4 I was on a dial up connection it took like three days to download. I sometimes believe that most problems with IE are had by those that fear big brother is watching if ya get my drift.

I find that those that lean towards the side of anti government or fear the government is out to get them are also the ones trying to rebel against Microsoft by using a differnt browser and claiming IE doesn't work.

That being said I am sure there are better things out there than IE. I am also sure that not every program will work with every application so sure there could be problems encountered with any program depending on how you use it and apply it. While standing in the smoke of claims that IE crashed someones computer and that ( insert your favorite browsers name here) solves all and makes life golden I have not seen a better browser yet. Different yes. Some things done better maybe. Overall no. I am not saying IE is the best nor do I work for Microsoft. All the things that most claim these other browsers do to make my life so sweet I guess I don't use because I have never seen them. I am sure it is just a preference thing on my end. IE does what I ask a browser to do. Knowingly I don't ask much. Kind of like a cell phone. I use my phone to make calls when away from home, not to send email or pictures or text messages or listen to mp3s or brows the internet. Just make calls so that makes my free cell phone just as good as any $600.00 IPhone out there.

I don't see it so much as an issue whether IE works or not, just whether it works as well as whomever is using it expects. Yes, I have virtually every alternate browser out there installed on my "big" XP machine (save for Safari, which I still find to be totally unstable). Of the ones installed, I use about 40% Firefox 3.5 and 40% Opera 9.64 (USB Version installed to HDD). The other 20% is spread out amongst K-Meleon, Dillo, Google Chrome and Links 0.98. Yes, IE is still installed, just never used, simply due to the security issues that it has had and the fact that Firefox has plug-ins that I like (and need) and Opera has speed and is lighter than all others. Though if I want extreme speed (such as reading news and no graphics) I'd fire up Links. So essentially, just as you find IE to do everything you need it to do, I find other browsers to do what I can't get IE to do. Not that I think IE is some government plot or big-brother scheme...

I can live with that. I have heard a lot about security issues over the years just havn't seen them myself. When I tried other browsers that supposedly did not have the issues that I had not run into anyway they seemd to be slower to me. I am sure it was a configuration issue on my part and not that the browser was actually slower but the issue I was trying to avoid I wasn't having so why reconfigure. The whole big brother thing was simply that some are anti Microsoft as if they are defeating the big guy by not using the browser he provides for free after they had PAID for the operating system it came with lol.

Like I said earlier basically I am old and set in my ways not that one is any better than any other in my opinion.

I think IE is fine and IE6 was extremely good - the most
stable browser I've used. And we have to remember that
there are still a massive number of users who are on IE6 and
have that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality, so MS are
doing the right thing in continuing support.

I think IE8 is okay, to be honest I think the websites it has
problems with are usually ones written for previous versions
of IE (I'm told these are non-standard)!

Right now though I'm using safari because I think it looks
really good...it's not stable (I get around as many crashes as
I do on IE8) but I love the Top Sites

Please bear in mind that for users of W2000 (such as I) and below are stuck with IE6, as higher versions do not support these os's.

The only alternative therefore (if one must) would seem to be moving to a totally different browser.

In recent times though there seem to be more problems than before, such as:-

IE has encountered an error and must close

So far I have not been able to totally eradicate this problem.

Another is failure to display some graphics.

If MS are going to continue to support IE6, personally I think this is good news.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.
