Hi all,

This week's poll question is about Microsoft's upcoming free antivirus program. Discuss here what you think about this new product, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

It will have the same problem any AV has which is the lag time between the day a virus is released & the day they learn of it's existence & add it to their dat files.

During that time an AV program has no benefit but locking the registry does. I lock mine with MJ Registry watcher. Nothing can be installed unless I unlock it. Besides that, it's free.

After 48hrs of loading Morro Microsoft Security Essentials; below's my two cents....

The Good:

- Virus & Spyware combo
- Real-time Protection
- Automatic definition updates
- Easy installation/configuration
- Small memory & processor footprint
- Custom scan scheduling
- Compatible with another AV installed
- Good detection capability

The Bad:

- Feels Mediocre-ish & incomplete - not like an app from M$
- Scan's not particularly faster than many of what's out there
- Mandatory SpyNet membership
- No rescue disk & boot record scan feature
- Pretty basic

Overall:

It's FREE & sufficient for average PC user.

Hmmmm......use an MS antivirus product. Let think about that.......

1) They never work right out of the box

2) The always require service packs and updates to fix glaring security holes

3) They're MS products.

I use eTrust Antivirus by Computer Associates (CA) and have for years.

I don't mind paying for a good product and having used eTrust in industry for clients numerous times I found I was quite happy with it and used it myself when I got sick and tired of "free" AV programs becoming 'not free'.

Most of the 'free' ones I tried in the past were substandard and the ones that weren't just wouldn't work right on my computers.

So in the end, I said to heck with it and broke down and paid for my AV.

I am confused. I just checked out the registry program you mentioned above.

States it is an evaluation license that has a 5 minute time limit. Do you know what that is about?

OtH,

http://www.jacobsm.com/mjsoft.htm#r...

I used this a long while back and it was indeed a good tool to have around...I ditched it because I use winpatrol plus and it has an almost Identical utility built in to it and there was no need for the duplicity.

If I recall....spybot and spywareblaster caused havoc with the application as well when they updates some specific registry keys...This issue was fixed and there is a continuous following on a website for support and an active participation from the designer Mark Jacobs.

As to the 5 minute thingy....something is not right there as this program has always been a freebie. Maybe the website that you are using for the download is trying something funny.

It appears you may be right. Look at the link below to see what I mean. Someone should report that to Mark Jacobs. It is the same version as elsewhere, 1.2.6.8.

That's the link I used to download registry watcher. I didn't have to pay but I liked the program, so I decided to send a donation. Mark lives in the UK so I sent an email to him asking if he would have a problem cashing an American money order. He said that he would attempt to cash anything I sent so, I sent him a $40 money order only to receive an email from him, saying that he lost it or maybe even shredded it. I didn't save the receipt so the money order company still has the $40.

I reported the other site to him.

yatsushiro,

If you read the posts in the threads as they are reporting that the program is indeed free as in NO cost what-so-ever
but if you like the program (which it is a great little app) then donate something to the guy that designed it so that it can remain free.

The statement to go to piratebay and get it totally free will get you run out of here as we do not promote piracy of any kind on this site.

I'm gonna download microsofts AV program soonish. Gonna at least try it.
I think different people prefer different AV software. Some like AVG which i think is extremly crap LOL

Then some like ones that block everything & is 'over the top' secure. I like using Comodo, Free, comes with everything else like Anti-Spam, Firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-Malware. Its got the lot.
Although you have to allow everything that runs & come to installing something it's hell. but it's good.

I wonder if MS AV looks for pirated software.

Too late! M$ capped the first 75,000 downloads and posted the following message:

Apparently, something went sour along the way. I don't know what's happening inside MS but it can't be good. Either Gates is downsizing or he is hiring too many people on H1B Visas.

TWC offers the Internet Security Suite from CA™ for free as part of their RoadRunner service.

I've been using it on all of my systems for a few years and am quite satisfied.

Yeah I'll probably give it a go, as long as it runs really light on CPU.

I've been using PCs online since about 98 and never once had a virus of any kind. Then again I don't download on the torrents and don't use MSN messenger, which seem to be the #1 and #2 ways people get viruses/trojans/malware from my experience.
I have no antivirus installed on my home machine (use McAfee at work) and have the mighty windows firewall protecting me.
