I'm on this side of the pond and I have to admit I never heard of them either.
All I know about Groupon: They had a series of controversial ads that generated more talk about the series than the service. I think that's all that really needs to be said.
I'd heard of them in as much as I had heard the name. Beyond that is just assumption on my part.

I often see Groupon adds on some sites i go to and the deals seem to be good but i have never really seen one yet i am interested in.

I think that's a "Grouper" DAVE. Maybe it refers to a group of grouper?
