Hi all,

This week's poll question is about how Circuit City's liquidation. Discuss here what you think about this company going out of business, and, if you like, the poll results themselves.

Thanks!
Justin

I personally did not shop Circuit City that much, but did from time to time as comparison shopping against Best Buy and Comp USA.
All three stores were within a mile of my residence and so was no problem. I bought more stuff from Circuit City in regards to music and auto amplifiers and cd players for the cars. They were the best around for that. And I think that is where their downfall was.

In our city of 350,000 there was one store and they were pretty high on all their merchandise, but cheap on the installation and services costs. and they did a dangerous thing from a business aspect....they never carried the up-to-the-minute products. They were always behind and thus Best Buy got most of the purchasing power from the entertainment and new phone and computers. Circuit City became a music/video store of sorts with their Tuesday DVD release program.

I think because of the store locations and layouts that locked them to certain areas along with a loss of direction is what held them back from being more prosperous that they were.

I've never been in a Circuit City, but we did have a very small Circuit City outlet in the local mall here upkept by a staff of 3, called The Source by Circuit City. I loved to go in there just to look around. Now that they closed it up, you have to travel 120 KM to get to the nearest electronics store.

In short, i'm gonna miss Circuit City.

Circuit City was pretty handy for me being just a few blocks away. Picked up some really good deals on a TV, home entertainment center etc.

Like Trent, browsing resulted in a few finds like Far Cry for 7.99 and my laptop bag for 18.99.

Store policies and staff were very good compared to Best Buy and CompUSA. With PCClub and Circuit City closed and CompUSA online only, we're left with Best Buy, Radio Shack, Office Depot, Office Max, Kmart, WalMart, Target, and Costco. None are even close to satisfactory for someone shopping for PC pieces unless your world hinges on digital photo frames.

The Fresno/Clovis metropolitan area in Central California has a population of about a million. Barring the occasional mom and pop pc store, I found a selection of three pc cases. Pretty pitiful...

I thought CompUSA was completely gone. Just online now, eh? I heard that back in the day it was great.

A couple of years ago, I heard that Radio Shack was out of business and closing up, but I guess they're still alive and kicking.

Wasn't Circuit City owned by Radio Shack, or something?

I believe that CompUSA was taken over by Tiger Direct, or at least some of their stores were. I'm not sure about CompUSA online. I did get a good deal on a plasma TV at Circuit City a few years ago. I've been in the store once since the selloff started-I might go back to see if there are any better deals.

I've never been in a circuit city so it's no loss to me.

Mind you, other than buying software, like a game, I never do business with any electronics store.

When I want to purchase a computer, laptop, or computer parts, I only do business with computer stores. Which is to say, companies that only sell computer related equipment and nothing else.

It's been my experience that electronic stores suck for technical support as they pay so little the tech's they hire are the newest and greenest. Whereas a good computer store will have people who are getting paid more and know more.

Also, there's the returning customer factor. If you spend some time talking to the people that own, and/or work at, the store, you get to know them, they get to know you and you get better service.

A prime example is the system I bought 2 years ago. I purchased it at a computer store. A year later the PSU fried one Friday evening. I took the PSU in to the shop the next morning. After saying my hello's I was immediately referred to the support desk. 10 minutes later the PSU had been diagnosed as "bad" by their technician (he said, and I quote, "This is just a matter of form Curt, we know your qualifications") and I was given a replacement.

About two months later, the replacement fried. I made a quick call in to the store as it was a Wednesday and I live in a small town about an hour and a half drive from the big city. We made a deal on an EnerMax PSU to replace the Antec ones I no longer trust (and would never buy again). The deal was, I paid the difference between the two. Because they like me so much, and felt so bad about the second PSU, the even shipped my replacement via courier and I had it the next day.

You can't get that kind of service from a chain store.

I gotta miss CC. The first to go was CompUSA, then it's CC. I wonder which speciality store is next.

Office Max already went bye-bye from here....a few years back as they went through a reorganization. The same with Staples.

Now it is Best Buy and Office Depot and Altex around here.

Altex is a electronics/computer store and they have everything one would need to build a computer plus they have their own brand as well. Too costly though for me although when in a pinch I will purchase lower end items just to get me by.

I have basically become an online purchaser as it is much cheaper ad the deliveries are quick enough.

I bought an Acer laptop for my son from newegg for $449 with free delivery and it was at my door within 4 days. The same computer at Best Buy was $499 plus tax so I saved right at $100 by going online and waiting 4 days.

How come nobody here has mentioned Future Shop? Not going out of business, but I mean just in general? It must be a Canadian-only store...
