It helps stop spambots and helps them serve you faster next time you visit. It also helps them monitor web traffic, like a tracking cookie we give freely. By you giving them this info they know what to target sell you next time you visit their website.
Not all websites have good privacy policies, so install WOT Web Of Trust browser tool. It will help weed out the bad ones.

Well, I guess it's my choice to sign up or not, but way too much information is being collected, for reasons that are mostly in a grey area.

Yes it sucks, privacy is a thing of the past :( Everyone is collecting info on us. The only way to truly avoid it, is to not use the internet.

These websites gather your info without you knowing and on sell that data to who ever buys it. So even without signing up they know your i.p addy, country, Operating System, Browser your using etc.
