I do alot of advertising on Craigslist and am amazed at the responses I get. I've also bought a boat, an SUV and other things for the best deal possible and the last thing I bought was a lower unit for my boat at an exceptional deal...saved lots of $'s

A few weeks back I sold a 21' Reynolds Catamaran for a friend in 2 weeks. He had been advertising it off and on in the local papers for almost 2 years and couldn't get any bites. I made a nice commission on that one.

The way to sell things is quite simple. Make the ad as descriptive as possible and take the best pics possible for the post, put a checkmark in the box that says hide my e-mail address, but be sure to have a contact number or e-mail address listed in the ad so they can contact you.
The spammers will spam you if you use the craigslist e-mail system. I haven't gotten any spam from typing my generic e-mail in the post either.

For my protection, I just use my MagicJack number so it doesn't interfere with our regular phone. The MJ number is not listed so it helps. I also registered the MJ number with the donotcall list and don't get any spam or telemarketer calls.

All in all, I love using Craigslist and I have no idea on how they make money to keep the site going.

Also, if you want to keep track of the hits on your site you can install an invisible counter from statcounter.com (free)
You'll be able to see where the hits come from etc.

Here in the UK, I think gumtree.com is probably more popular. From what I have seen it is similar to craigslist.

I have used gumtree successfully quite a number of times.

When I am selling, although I provide my email address (which is hidden and email replies are passed over via gumtree), as I want to move quickly my preferred contact method is by mobile phone, although I advise no texts.

The reason no texts is again time as one has to spend time composing replies and generally the detail involved is too complex and lengthy for texting. Then more delay waiting for a reply. Far better normal conversation.

As an example about a month back, I advertised my car one day and the next it was driven away by the new owner.

Buyers could not believe it was such a bargain and I was selling honourably. The guy who finally bought it wanted to buy over the phone without even seeing it. This I refused, promising I would hold it until he had and then if he was happy it was his.
He was very happy. :-)
