Would any one be interested in posting what they might think is a great or lifestyle changing gadget for the last 50 years?
I say the Sony Walkman.
The implications of this device are very far reaching.
This is just for fun, but I'd be interested in what others have to say.
Nominate your favorite.

Great post!
I have several:
Microcomputers
-Graphical user interfaces helped them gain popularity with Muggles (non-Geeks) :-)
The Internet
-YouTube
-Broadband connections to the Tubes
-emoticons :P
-MP3
Home video (no need to go to a poorly maintained theater)
The digital camera
The cell phone
Video gamesI'm sure I'm missing something important.
The HTPC:
Pentium M oc'ed to 2.82GHz, 667FSB, 2MB L2
3GB of DDR-800 @ 667MHz
GeForce 9600GT
Blu-Ray

Youtube is not a gadget. Aside from internet related stuff I would agree with the cell phone & I would add the cordless drill (screw gun).
Novocaine isn't a gadget either but going to the dentist was hell before it.

Microwave Oven: Without it, millions -- mostly dudes -- would starve to death!
Beer Can: Without it, millions more of taste buds would be unemployed or underemployed!
The Pill: 'Nuff said!

Disposable diapers is a good answer but I haven't seen a 426 Hemi in 30 years.
How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

30 years between you and a 426? In a couple of more years you'll be wearing disposable diapers. :)

I'm sure it can happen but I hope it's closer to another 30 years.

I wonder how many hours and gallons have been saved since these were introduced.
My savings alone have more than paid for my unit.

couple more....
the Ball Bearing. both constructive and destructive
& of course the flux capacitor =)

The flux capacitor may not count as it had limited distribution.

Come by the house Skip you can see an old 426 Hemi with an 8/71 blower and alcohol injected pushing about 1047 horses according to the dyno. In my mind though the greatest invention seems to get used the least and is brought to us by Trojan!
Practice makes perfect but only if you practice perfectly!

Condoms have been around for over 1000 years.
So they don't count for being in the last 50 years.
That's not to say they aren't a great invention.

Same thing with ball bearings btw. They were invented by Leonardo DeCaprio. :)

ok....here's a recent one then.

Yeah likelystory, once had a Keith Black build that ran a 3000# doorslammer in the low 9's.
That old hemi technology gave engine designers an entirely new direction.
A GMC 8-71 would be fun. Mine was scary enough with a single Dominator...that thing never quit pullin'.

The Polaroid camera?
Led the whole revolution to digital.
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.
- Plato

re: Polaroid
I spent over 2 decades working for Kodak so I'm pretty confident in refuting the claim that Polaroid "led the whole revolution to digital".
In fact, it was the "digital revolution" that put Polaroid out of business.
Read this:
http://www.articlesbase.com/advice-...
Unfortunately (for me and many other loyal employees) Kodak also ignored what was happening around them and failed to notice, until it was way too late, that their cash-cow's utter was drying up.

I think you misunderstood me.The idea of a camera that developed it's own film right on the spot was what I meant.
Not that Polaroid was going into the digital business. I'm sorry you lost your psoition and livelyhood. It wasn't meant as aswipe at Kodak.
But this is from the article you pointed to, also:
They simply chose to ignore what was coming, and what was coming was a TIDAL WAVE, that would sweep away Kodak's traditional business. Kodak could have chosen to lead the digital revolution. They could have chosen to take the billions of dollars of cash generated by their traditional chemically based systems, and redeploy in other high end technology driven businesses like digital imaging in the medical industry. No, neither choice happened. The company chose instead, to DO NOTHING. Try to maintain the status quo was the order of the day.Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.
- Plato

That was exactly my point!
Either company could have chosen to lead the revolution, but neither did.
Your post, in it's simplicity, seems to imply that the Polaroid camera was one of the best inventions or gadgets because it "Led the whole revolution to digital". Your words.
In fact, it had nothing to do with the digital revolution. There was no "cause and effect".
P.S. I didn't take your post as a swipe at Kodak nor do I need your sympathy - although I certainly appreciate the gesture! <g>
There is life after Kodak/Enron/Global Crossing/Lehman Brothers/Xerox/Insert bankrupt auto company name here.
I have a better job, another set of friends and more knowledge and experience than I had before, so I'm ahead of the game.
In fact, if anyone deserves sympathy, it's the folks who are still at places like Kodak that just about every year, right before Christmas, go through the ranking process to see if they'll still have their job come the new year.
If you've never been through that, year after year, it's hard to explain the stress that puts one through.

I can only imagine.
I just meant that the Polaroid camera was new concept that actually worked.
Not that Polaroid developed digital photography.
The Wright brothers probably never dreamt of going to the moon, but the airplane led the way there even though they didn't invent the concept.
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.
- Plato

Hey Mattio...in response to "Without PC's" 1-5; the without part sounds pretty cool.
I'd never need help with a batch either.
Skip

Apples and oranges.
No one can argue that the Wright brothers advanced aviation technology tremendously. Even though rockets and attempts at human flight have been around almost since the dawn of man, one could easily pick 1900 and say that from then on the airplane led the way to moon.
However, not only didn't Polaroid invent digital photography, nothing they did "led the whole revolution to digital".
For a history of digital photography, see here:
http://inventors.about.com/library/...
There's mention of Sony, Texas Instruments, NASA, Kodak and even Bing Crosby, but not one word about Polaroid.
The roots of digital photography lie in the electronic transfer of images to tape, not in the immediacy of "instant film".
There is simply no connection.

"There is simply no connection."
There is to the general public who cares nothing about the going ons at the companies involved.
They wanted their pictures and they wanted them now.
What I hear, I forget. What I see, I remember. What I do, I understand.
Confucius
- Plato

Please remember what we are debating here:
You have claimed that Polaroid is a candidate to be chosen as the "best invention or gadget" because they "led the whole revolution to digital."
I hope by now that I have been able to convince you that Polaroid had nothing to do with the "revolution" to digital. They stood on the sidelines and watched it happen.
Now, if you are changing the debate and claiming that the general public believes that Polaroid "Led the whole revolution to digital." then my gut feeling is that you are mistaken in that believe. Take you own poll, but I'm pretty confident that very few people believe that Polaroid "led the revolution to Digital".
If they do believe it, then they are wrong, as the history of digital photography shows.
Just because "people want their pictures now", which can be accomplished chemically with instant film or electronically via digital technology, does not mean that one led to the other.
Once again, in terms of the argument that Polaroid is the best invention or gadget because they led the whole revolution to digital, there is simply no connection.

Wright brothers vs the little known:

I don't want this thread hijacked by a ridiculous argument.
Now back to the nominations.! :)

You only encourage me to answer by calling an argument rediculous.
The challenge was put forward "No one can argue..." and I responded in kind.
Now don't gfet your knickers in a twist, this thread has had 43 responses... and will undoubtedly remain popular.
I'm sure my single interjection won't qualify as thread hijack :-D

@ btk1w1
I didn't say that "No one can argue that the Wright brothers performed Man's First Powered Flight".
I said "No one can argue that the Wright brothers advanced aviation technology tremendously."
Now, that could start a ridiculous argument! <g>

DD I reread your post...
"No one can argue that the Wright brothers advanced aviation technology tremendously"
I concede, my error.
I am raising the white flag so this thread isn't hijacked.

In the pure machine world, this one is truly praiseworthy...the Litter Robot. Second to that is the Roomba. In the old-school man-pushing-the-machine world, the Dyson vacuum and video poker...better your odds for a clean full house.

My first response to this thread was over three months ago. Now I want to change my answer to:
The debit card. I live with mine I haven't touched cash in I don't know how long.Likely.
P.S.Hey Skip I am selling my Hemi.
It is a 1969 Barracuda. I put the enginge together myself many years ago. It has a Lenco five speed transmission, a converted ford nine inch rear floater with a detroit locker for the street. There are several different gears that will go with it. The blower is a Weiand. It is alcohol injected but can easily be converted to pump gas but don't know why one would.
I ran a 6.48/173.079 Mph at the Gator Nationals in Gainsville a few years back. It has more I was light on the foot (scared the heck out of me). Only asking $35,000.00

Likely,
I understand; sure can't afford to race anymore...that's why we sold the doorslammer. If it's a turn key operation, your 'Cuda should sell in a hot minute if advertised in Hemmings.
We ran consistent 11.0's/125 mph for 15 years and the car sold within 2 days of being advertised. A feature in Car Craft didn't hurt any either.
"*wiping drool off my chin*"
Yeah, that's two and a half seconds quicker than I've ever ran.
Skip

Skip,
Supposedly there is a guy comming from some where in N.J. to look at it this weekend. I really don't want to part with it but heck I haven't raced it in at least 4 years now haven't even driven it it about 6 months. I still go out and fire it off at least a few times a month. It seems here lately it's more in the way than anything. Everything I do around the house I almaost always have to move it to get to some tool or piece of equipment. I am the only one here that can drive it so I have to stop and move it.
It isn't so much that I think it is all that or that it's that fast or anything but it's the last one that I built. And I know I won't be building another. I've got a lot of wrench hours on that thing. The only thing I didn't do was some of the machine work. Everything els was myself and one old friend from the frame conectors to the paint. We even hand made the headers, out of the box pipes wouldn't leave enough room for the Lenco.
I tried to sell it to some friends here that are still running but they couldn't do it. One said he knew a guy that lived mopar up north and he would give him a call. I haven't even advertised it yet. His guy called me early yesterday. Maybe?
