Comment:
What are the reliable utilities in Solaris which I can use to backup the filesystem? I am not sure what version we are using but I am assuming that we are using the latest version (or one version older, worst case). I've only worked with AIX or HP-UX, where we use 'dd' or 'tar'. Is there a similar utility in Solaris which backs up even 'open' files (something I've enoc--tered in Windows operating system). Any quick reply will be highly appreciated. Thanks Ricky

It is best to have the system as quite as possible, meaning to disk writes and single user login if possible. Of course you have dd and tar, something a quick scan of your host would reveal, but you also have ufsdump as a good tool to backup a filesystem.
