Comment:

I am trying to tar some files onto a dds2 4mm tape from a server. Half way through the "i/o error: unexpected EOF" shows up.

Any ideas? Is there somewhere I can find info on this type of error?

thanks

Is there a way to check the amount of space left on the tape? I've looked into tar and mt commands but cant find anything that does this.

How are you performing the tar command?

e.g. tar cvf /dev/rmt/0n

I am running this command:

tar cvhf /dev/rmt/0n

Thought:

if I run

tar cvhf /dev/rmt/0nc

it might just work, because I think I'm running out of space.

Can you not compress whatever you're backing up first and then tar it? If it's mostly text files then you should be able to save a significant amount of storage space on your media.
