Comment:

Using a solaris 8 sun box. Booted into single user mode off of a solaris CD and manually changed our shadow file to show root as having no password. Was able to save this file.

However, after a reset of the SUN box, the password had not been cleared and we could not log on as root. When going through this process again, the shadow file appeared not to have been reset (as shown by the date).

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

We tried this on a spare SUN box with exactly the same spec and the password was reset successfully.

what were you editing the shadow file with?
sounds like you might have closed without saving.

I used vi to edit the shadow file.

It had no errors saving. When exited the file, did go back in to make sure that the changes had been successful and they were.

Only after a reset, did the shadow file go back to its previous state.

If you are using DiskSuite or Veritas to
mirror your boot disk then you either have to
break the mirror(s) edit, attach mirror and
re-sync or, mount up and edit your
/etc/shadow on the mirror(s) as well.

If I understand it correctly you have to run FSCK first, otherwise the changes my not apply. This can be caused if the file system is unclean. However I can't even get as far as you have so I could be very wrong :(.
