A remote site has recently upgrade their workstations to Solaris 10 sense then we have not been able to establish a ftp connection with them. A ping/traceroute from us to them works fine and the ping/traceroute from them to us is fine. From the Solaris workstations they can establish a ftp connection with us, but when we try to ftp to them it sits in Trying: until the connection timeout.
Thanks

Consider SFTP or other secure connection to begin with.
Root access is not a good idea either.
See this for tips.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
