Telnet prompt delay

Comment:

I have a server on Sol 10 that is also running Veritas Cluster in an HA config.

When I telnet, or ftp to the master server there is a delay of around 20-30 seconds before receiving a prompt. X11 does not work either due to timeout.

The obvious cause for this is that the server is doing a reverse lookup on the source IP of the session initiator.... However, when tracing I found this is when the server is doing something very peculiar. Instead of trying to resolve the incoming IP it sends a request to the DNS server to resolve some seemingly random IPv6 address.

In no way is the box configured to run or using IPv6. Everything in the network is IPv4.

This problem does not exist on the mate, I get a telnet/ftp prompt straight away, X11 working fine.

Even more bizarrely, If I fail over to the mate this problem is also transferred!?!

If necessary I can provide some trace files if anyone requires.

This is one of the strangest problems I have seen...

I did notice that there is an "::1" entry in the host file, which I believe represents localhost in IPv6 format and there are IPv6 entries in the /etc/protocols file, but ifconfig -a6 returns no value.

I cannot understand why or where it gets these IPv6 addresses and tries to resolve them - has any seen this before?

Any help ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Need to start at dns server, what and where is it?

telnet by fqdn, ip or hostfile name?

Might play with netstat, traceroute.

The following commands are modified to accommodate the Solaris implementation of IPv6.

*

ifconfig(1M)
*

netstat(1M)
*

snoop(1M)
*

ping(1M)
*

traceroute(1M)

Also there is another ipv6 file that might be under /etc.

I still suspect dns.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Hi,

Appreciate the response!

The DNS server is a propriatory installation called IP Works, which is just sitting on top on standard BIND.

However, it is the Solaris server that is sending these unexpected IPv6 resolution requests - do you have any idea why it might do this?
