Hi, I am trying to set up a jumpstart install server for solaris 8. My goal is to use the sysidcfg and jumpstart installation combined.

I run into problems if I use ./add_client -e ethernet_add -p install_server:/space/config
-c install_server:/space/jumpstart client platform

After the system identification is succefully completed the installation goes interactive instead of using the jumpstart directory. I get a message "searching for jumpstart director.... not found".

Interestingly enogh, if I just use ./add_client without specifying a sysidcfg file - not using the -p option - the installation indeed finds the jumpstart directory and the installation works as planned.

I have made sure that the directories are shared - using dfshares and verifying /etc/dfs/dfstab files - and tried all kinds of gymnastics with ./add_client but no results.

Both the client and the server are on the same subnet

Any ideas or help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks
Aslam Khokhar

Not sure, but it sounds like it is not finding the rules.ok file. As I recall, jumpstart will go to interactive mode if it does not find it.

You should have an entry in the server /etc/bootparams file that looks like the following:
install_config=install_server:/space/jumpstart

and the rules.ok file needs to be located in /space/jumpstart.

/space/jumpstart needs to be shared.

I assume you are running add_install_client and not add_client.

Thanks for your reply. You are right. This is the message that pops up everytime.

searching for jumpstart directory...
not found
Warning: Could not find matching rule in rules.ok

I have made sure that the /etc/bootparams entries are correct

install_config=client:/space/jumpstart sysid_config=client:/space/config

I am using the add_client as follows:
./add_install_client -e ethernet_address -c install_server:/space/jumpstart -p install_server:/space/config client sun4u

With the above command the system identification file sysidcfg is found and system id is done correctly but after the above warning installation goes interactive

If I remove the -p entry in ./add_install_client then the jumpstart directory is correctly found and installation is done based on the defined profile. However I have to complete the system identificagtion steps - which defeats the purpose of a full hands off installation.

Any suggestions, hints, or ideas are very much appreciated

Aslam

I think I can help here, but I've a number of questions.

Have you got all of the right info in your sysidcfg?

Have you got the correct entried in /etc/bootparams and /etc/ethers??

What have you shared???

Have you run the ./check script on your rules file???

There are lots of things to consider during a jumpstart, and once you've got that working, I may be a able to help with other scripts for adding software in a modular fashion.

Mail me.
