Hi,

I've got an IPX box with SunOS 5.6. I attached a Sun keyboard and monitor that came with a Sparc10 to the IPX box. However, the IPX box does not respond when I try to login using the console: I just type characters and nothing apears on the screen. The only key sequence taht does work is STOP-A. Once I do that, then I am able to run commands in that mode. (The box does display the boot sequence and so forth to the monitor.)

I can telnet and ssh into the box just fine.

Thanks,
-Ryan Casey

I think most sun monitors are not multi-sync. Is this monitor perhaps too large to be driven by the graphics card in the ipx ? is the graphic card removable or can you install a second from the sparc 10 ? When you say "using the console" you are talking about the sun monitor, keyboard and mouse as opposed to a terminal like a vt100, right?

Yes, when I saying using the console, I mean the keyboard and monitor. (Sorry for not being clear.) The monitor works fine, I can see the boot messages, and then I see the login: prompt. But when I try to type a username and hit enter, nothing appears on the screen. Hitting STOP-A causes it to display the "ok" prompt, and then I can type and run commands.

Thanks,

Can you for the purposes of testing install a different sun video card in this machine ? Quite possible the video card is not capable of driving the monitor beyond the level of the initial boot screen.

If you have a terminal, such as a vt100, you could attach that to the serial port with a null modem if that would do you any good. No need for video card, sun monitor, sun keyboard, etc

No, I'm affraid I'm not able to install another video card. I will try to buy a serial cable, but the IPX takes an 8DIN cable, which are not easy to find.

Thanks,

Really ? It is not db9 or db25 ? I'll admit I didn't pay close attention to the last ipx I played with . Good luck with it.

Yep, it's an 8 pin connection. Some good info on the IPX is at:

And I can actually buy a cable for it from:

Thanks,
