Hi all can any explain me the versioning convenctions followed in solaris

what is kernal version
what is release version
what is the latest versions

when i do a uname -a on my system it dispaly
1)SunOS <myhostname1> 5.8 Generic_108528-18 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2

and other one
2)SunOS <myhostname2> 5.8 Generic_108528-15 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10

for me host1 is faster that host2
can any one explain me why.is it because of hardware/OS

kernel has nothing to do with speed...

a newer machine on a old kernel will still be faster than an old machine with a newer kernel.


5.8 - sun OS
108528-15 - kernel patch level.. its up to 29 if i'm correct
sun4u sparc - architecture
UltraAX-i2 - machine base model

i suggest you use the /usr/platform/<model>/sbin/prtdiag

that'll clearly show you why host1 is faster than host2
