I work for a medical distribution company that went through there inventory, and decided that instead of re-entering the lost product into inventory they would trash a "few" pcs etc.
I now have a Sun microsystems SunBlade 2500.
When I power it up I get a screen that says
Solaris...Username...Password.
This computer is out of the box.
If I click "Help", it says use root.
I am an XP user, but wouldn't mind learning "linix" at the same time as having XP, on this computer.
Also, the DVD won't even open so I can put in the disk provided.
Please be gentle.... NUBEE

Try blank password (that is enter nothing) or the word root first.
It can't run XP unless your run a Virtual machine. The processor is a sparc not an intel. All programs you need to watch out for sparc.
Geeze! No wonder my health care costs so much!
I got an old piece of stainless steel from where I work.
It is real UNIX by the way. It is a very good OS and could suite many people.
Sun is a top company for documentation.
The way to get password is normally boot to cd and open as single user. Dunno why the cd doesn't open. There is a sort of bios config on that SPARC system. You access almost a mini OS to set config. It should have a special keyboard with a key to access. Again, you would need to read up on that model.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Thanks jefro for the quick response, and information. I will try your suggestions when I get home.
P.S You pay for health care? Oh Canada :)LOL

If you do want linux see this.
See also newer versions of Sun's Solaris.

Thanks again jefro,
Tried root, "root", ROOT, still nothing.
I opened the dvd with a paperclip in the tiny hole on the front, now it will open and close, tried to put in the cd provided but it still went through bios, and brought me to the login screen.
I imagine that the dvd is not the master ???, the first to boot.
I will check out the links you provided.
I've got lots of homework. :( HAHA

You have to set the dvd as default in what Sun uses as a bios. It is really a boot environment or mini-os. It should be the latest version of openboot. If not you might wish to consider installing it at some time.
This is your place to start.
