I may be talking crap, but I was under the impression that the new hardware etc required Solaris 8 and above.....

Ok,
According to Sun's site, it should be compatible with previous Solaris revisions. Please can you give some more detail on what you have tried to do and what error messages you are getting?

Ultra sparc III's only work under solaris 8. It's because the earlier kernels do not recognize the architecture.
