Hi to all,

I need an advice.
I have a Veritas VCS for Oracle installed on two Solaris servers E450 and E220.
Today I have the opportunity to upgrade the servers, but I’m wondering whether i should try and switch to Linux platform.
On one hand Linux is cheaper and (theoretically) faster on the Second hand Solaris is proved himself on our company as very stable system.

Please advice,

Thanks in advance,

Lev Andelman

Hello, Lev.

I do not really have an answer for you, but perhaps some issues to consider.

I assume that you want to run Linux on your Sun SPARC servers. One of the biggest sources of help that I have found since I first started using Linux on the desktop in November 2002 is the Linux community. Users in on-line Linux forums, for example, can provide solutions to problems that might have you completely stumped. Of course, most Linux servers and desktop machines are using Intel or AMD processors, but I don't see the underlying hardware platform as being an issue, unless you run into hardware compatibility problems.

The first thing I'd suggest is checking a couple of the on-line Linux forums -- such as JustLinux.com and LinuxQuestions.org -- and searching each respective community for discussions about Linux on the SPARC platform.

Even if you do not find many, or any, discussions about running Linux on the SPARC platform, I would ask the very same questions that you asked here in Computing.Net, in either, or both, of the two forums. (JustLinux.com has more "message traffic," incidentally.)

See what kind of responses you get and note the tone of the responses. Are people friendly and eager to help, for example? Do they seem knowledgeable about SPARC hardware? (You might even find someone who has made the very same switch that you are contemplating!) :-)

For what it's worth, Lev, that is my suggestion for a first step. Again, I have not personally run Linux as a server, only as a desktop operating system, so "take my advice with a very large grain of salt," to quote an old saying.

I wish you every success, Lev!

Cordially,

David
