Hello,

I got a used Ultra-10 box, but when I boot it, the system hang after display message:
"Starting Desktop Login on display :0...
Wait for the Desktop Login screen before
login"

It just stays there.

Please give some helps/suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

do u have all the patches installed ?.You could also kill X by renaming /etc/rc2.d/S99dtlogin to /etc/rc2.d/s99dtlogin and bounce the box.Start the daemon manually and do a truss on the pid .I suspect it could be a display adaptor that needs a patch.
Bye

Yes sulaiman has the right idea here, but you will need to get into the box somehow. You can either go through the serial port. You will need another system and a DB25 serial adapter. Unplug the keyboard and reboot. if the other box is a Unix box you can use the tip command: # tip -9600 /dev/ttya, or if windows you can use hyperterminal to connect.

Otherwise you can boot to cdrom (provided you have the Solaris media). Then you will want to mount the root filesystem probably on /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 and you can rename the S99dtlogin file.

Thanks.
I suspected the video card caused the problem
because I use the Creator3D card.
Thanks again.

Abid,
I found this doc from Sun's website.
I didn't try yet but it should help.
=================================

Before installing the Creator Frame Buffer in an Ultra Enterprise
System, determine the OBP (OpenBoot PROM) version number:
1. Type the following:
% /usr/platform/sun4u/sbin/prtdiag -v
2. If the version is OBP 3.2.9 or greater, install the Creator board.
See the installation instructions in the hardware documentation
that came with your system.
3. If the version is OBP 3.2.8 or lower, halt the system and type the
following:
# init 0
OK reset
OK nvedit
0: h# 40000 to /fcode-prom
Press CONTROL-C to exit nvedit.
4. Now type the following:
OK nvstore
OK setenv use-nvramrc? true
5. Turn off the power to the system and install the Creator board.
See the installation instructions in the hardware documentation
that came with your system. The Creator Frame Buffer installs on
the UPA connector of the Graphics I/O board.
