I encountered the same .rr file extension when I d/l'ed the Solaris Software Companion CD image. The Sun web page made it sound like the file was an .iso image file, but after using bunzip2, it had the .rr extension. However, I was able to mount it after using the lofiadm utility mentioned on the Sun web page (see lofiadm man page for details; it was easy). This was all done on an Ultra 10 box running Solaris 9. I don't know if x86 Solaris 9 comes with lofiadm, but the Sun web page didn't say that it didn't. Of course, it didn't tell us what the .rr extension was either.... Good luck.

It is an iso image of sorts. Rename it to .iso, or get a program that will ignore the extension and burn whatever you tell it to. If you manage to burn it to a CD and stick it in the CD drive of a solaris computer, it will be recognized. However, no other OS I'm aware of will. So you'll burn it and it will look like trash, but when you put it in your Solaris box, all will be well. Good luck.
