OS: Solaris 9 X86
CPU/Ram: PIII 866 /512 Ram
Comment:

My home LAN network consist of three machines:
1. linux (Linux Mandrake 9.1) which connects to my ISP and it is router/gateway for my lan. IP (192.168.1.1)
2. solaris (Solaris 9 X86) (192.168.1.2)
3. windows (Windows XP) (192.168.1.3)

linux and windows are working good, but My Solaris box can't see/ping other machines, and others can't ping solaris.
The system can ping itself.

#ping 127.0.0.1
127.0.0.1 is alive
#ping localhost
localhost is alive
#ping 192.168.1.2
192.168.1.2 is alive
#ping solaris
solaris is alive

Here is how I have configured my solaris box.

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
192.168.1.1 linux linux.calmadow.com
192.168.1.2 solaris solaris.calmadow.com
192.168.1.3 windows windows.calmadow.com

/etc/hostname.elxl0
solaris

/etc/netmasks
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0

/etc/resolv.conf
domain my_isp.domain.com
nameserver 24.153.23.66
nameserver 24.153.22.195

/etc/defaultrouter
192.168.1.1

The output of the "ifconfig -a ", "netstate -nr", and "arp -a" commands are as follows:

#ifconfig -a

lo0: flags=1000849 mtu 8232 index 1
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
elxl0 : flags=1000843 mtu 1500 index 2
inet 192.168.1.2 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
ether 0:a0:24:df:a8:fa

#netstate -nr
destination gateway flags ref use interface
192.168.1.0 192.168.1.2 U 1 34 elxl0
224.0.0.0 192.168.1.2 U 1 0 elxl0
default 192.168.1.1 UG 1 0
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UG 23 lo0

#arp -a
device IP Mask flags physical Addr
elxl0 solaris 255.255.255.255 sp
elxl0 224.0.0.0 240.0.0.0 sm

I don't see the default route in the "arp -a" output, I don't understand what 224.0.0.0 is

Actually It is my first time I install solaris/unix and I have no experience of Solaris/Unix, but I have been using linux for 1 year. I have spent for the last 30 hours searching on GOOGLE, but all in vain. I would be very happy if some one tell what I have done wrong or If I have to change something.

NOTE: When I ping from windows to linux or linux to windows only the corresponding two lights of the hub is flushing, but if I ping from solaris to windows/linux or windows/linux to solaris all three lights are flushing and I see the following line in the linux's /var/log/message

Jul 7 23:25:13 linux rwhod[22253]: sendto(192.168.1.255): Operation not permitted

Please help

Thanks in advance

have you troubleshoot this problem at the physical lvl....

ie. changed cables and plug to other ports in the hub...

Yes I did all those things but nothing worked.

I have posted this message to sun forum, and someone replyed the following message. I disabled the OS'a plug & play in the BIOS, and It works!!
---------------------
This could be a problem with the NIC not receiving interrupts.

A possible solution is contained in reply #5, here:

http://forum.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=14244

I think the root cause is described here:

http://forum.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=8921

I've not yet tested it, but patch 114324-03 "SunOS 5.9_x86: pcplusmp Patch" might fix this issue.
---------------------------

thanks mark

I had this same problem with the Sparc version. I could ping localhost, hostname, and ip but I couldn’t ping any other computer on the network.

Turns out it was a duplex / speed miss match. I had to manual set the duplex and speed of the network card.

If you are getting Link Down: Check Cable errors or something like that I’ll bet it’s the same problem I had.

I don’t remember off hand how to set the speed and duplex, maybe someone else can post that. I know you can do a search on google and find the answer.

I had this same problem with the Solaris 9 for x86.
It only can ping itself. It can't ping other computer. And if I set IPaddress, I can't inter the Xwindow.
Disable the OS's plug & play in the BIOS,it will be ok,will it?
And how I disable the OS's plug & play in the BIOS?
