HI all,

I NEED YOUR HELP.
I can't get connectivity thru my Sun Ultra 5 Box through my Linksys Etherfast Cable / DSL Router attached to a Westell DSL
Modem using Verizon DSL in my home.
The Ultra is runing Solaris 9 OS (new) .

I've done the sys-unconfig and setup, perhaps not right.
I've read alot on this site, printed everything and tried it.
re-edited files, created some, nothing doing.
I've called Verizon, they don't want to discuss Sun Solaris.

Is there and easy way to get this done?
One friend of mine suggested I switch to OpenBSD, but I'm taking a class in solaris administration,
so I thought I would try to stick with it.

HELP if you can and thanks ahead of time

regards,

Set up the linksys to provide DHCP information to your local LAN.
If the sun machine is not already expecting to receive it's IP informartion from a DHCP server, you can go through the sys-unconfig steps to reenter the network information. That is the easiest router.
If you want static information in the sun, sys-unconfig and enter appropriate IP number and routing information. After the machine comes up you will need to configure /etc/defaultrouter and /etc/resolv.conf

Write back if this does not solve your problem.

cat \<\search domainname.com

nameserver 1.2.3.5
nameserver 1.2.3.6

Thanks for the information.

Some things I don’t quite understand, as I am a Newbie to Solaris.
The Linksys is providing dhcp to the windows machine.
I always do a sys-unconfig and was advised not to check network,
I got my host name showing up.
I’ve also been advised to set up a static address, from the linksys
I have to read the linksys manual to find out how to do that.
Anymore info you can provide would be great.

Thanks ahead of time,
Regards,

During the sys-unconfig proceedure tell it your machine is networked and you expect to receive IP information from the DCHP server.

I got a similiar situation; however, I'm using Sol 8 on an ultra 5 with a linksys DSL router through Verizon. Its pretty easy to set up and have the sun server gain access to the world. I set mine up with a static ip, however, on the router, i set it up to assign ip's (dhcp) in the range of like 5 addresses. Just enough for each machine on my LAN. All machines have static so that only really leaves on free ip which is my laptop when I plug it in. The only thing on Sun you have to remember is to set up your /etc/resolv.conf file to be the DNS servers of your ip, /etc/nsswitch.conf to use dns and add the default gateway of your router. That's it.

HJ,

Could you please send me the contents of your /etc/resolv.conf file and /etc/nsswitch.conf so that I can use them as example to modify mine.

My email address is theonwosu@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Theo
