Comment:

I'm trying to install solaris 9 x86 on my PC. I've tried without any partition (I also executed the fdisk /mbr commad), with a FAT32 partition and empty space, only with a FAT32 partition ,etc (disk has DMA option active and I verified that 'setprop ata-dma-enable 1' is in /boot/solaris/bootenv.rc). In any of the cases I can'tinstall SOLARIS. First I ge the message:
"WARNING: /pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@0/cmdk@0,0 (Disk 0):
Error for command 'read sector' Error Level: Informational
Sense Key: aborted command
Vendor 'GEN-ATA 'error code: 0X3"
The installation proceeds until the moment where it's supposed to do the partition(s). It just shows the same error message (several times) and it says that it "cannot create the needed partition on c0d0"
Does anyone knows how to solve this?
Thanks

Haven't tried with x86 but when the GUI comes up, right click on the desktop. Select either console or terminal ( a command window ) and type format. You will get an option to select your hard drive. The choice will be an integer. Once selected, label then format. The installation should go OK after that.

It didn't work:
when I type label I get: Current disk is unformatted
when I type format I get: cannot format this drive. Please use your Manufacturer supplied formating utility.
When I try to format or use fdisk I always get the message I wrote on my first message.

hi out there,
i was experiencing the same problem (exactly the same error code), but what i did was to disable ata-dma-enabled property as described on
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/816-222/6m6nmlsse?a=view
(see section "direct memory access and pci-ide systems" ) .. and everything is fine now ....
