I think I'm going crazy...is init 1 broken in Solaris 9? I went to apply the latest patch set, for the first time on my newly installed solaris 9 servers. I have a cyclades permanently attached to all of my headles *nix servers for easy console access. Went onto the console, logged in as root, issued the init 1. The box proceeded to kill all services and gave me the "Enter ctrl-d or root password for system maintenance" message. I entered the root password, and blam...nothing...completly unresponsive server. I had to push the button and manually power it down, then when I watched it come back up, seemed fine, could see it on the console fine. Tried the init 1 again...blam...nothing. What is going on?

Funny. I had the same problem at home. I am running a dual boot S-9 and WinXP, and even though everyone recommends against it, I have no trouble out of it. Anyway, I have a need to shut down S-9 quite regularly. Wife not interested in Unix. Go figure. Anyway, I read that S-9 has alot of linux capability, so I tried the 'reboot' command, and it bypasses init1. Then, during POST, just kill the power.
