Comment:

In the upgrade I get to the part, after all the network configuration and timezone stuff, that appears to be ready to load stuff from the 1st cd and there's a little progress bar at the bottom, but it never increments, and I eventually get a dialogue that says the install failed. It says "ERROR: Could not mount either root, or swap, or some other file system." Man, that was a lot of help! I think that may have something to do with using the second disk as the "Specify Backup Media" location. And the / slice on the first disk is about at about 92% capacity. However, the temporary install software is being loaded onto a swap slice that it says is big enough to do the upgrade. There are two swap slices, each about 860MB or so. Don't ask me why?

That was using that Install CD, which uses Web Start, and going to the first of the two other CDs. If I boot from the first CD and just leave that Install CD out of the process, I get more of a text mode interface, suninstall I think, and it get's to the same place in the process, but it tells me: "The Solaris version (Solaris 8) on slice c0t0d0s0 cannot be upgraded. A file system listed in the file system table (vfstab) could not be checked by fsck." It would be nice if it would tell me which one!!

Obviously, I am new at this.

Any ideas on what's going on? How to resolve?

Thanks...

do a pfinstall - look up man page. this symulates an upgrade and gives verbose listing of what is required. You shoudl be doing an upgrade, not inital install so double checke what your selecting.
