Comment: I have Solaris 8 for Intel on one machine, and w2k on another machine which serves as the gateway to internet. I can ping other hosts from the Solaris machine, but can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

Reply: (edit)If you can ping remote hosts from your Solaris box by going through your Win2k box you should be able to browse the net. If all you wanna do is browse on the Solaris try running a proxy server on the Win2k. If you wanna rsh, telnet or any of that sort of stuff, i would recommend you purchase a router.

Reply: (edit)Be sure that your w2k is configured as router and it's IP is set as default GW in solaris

Reply: (edit)I tried editing resolve.conf too, but still no luck. I have linux and other w2k machines that can access the web through the w2k "gateway" computer without any problems. It's just the solaris machine that is giving me difficulty. I've been reading up on DNS, but I don't think that's the problem. Shri, maybe you should re-post your message so that it shows up on the first page of the solaris forum. It's more likely to be seen that way. Good luck. If I discover anything I'll post it here.

Reply: (edit)I followed the advice of Westwood1. I downloaded a proxy server, and can now access the internet on my solaris machine. Why didn't I have to do that for my linux machines? Anyway, Westwood1, thanks for the advice.

Reply: (edit)verify with your defaultrouter file(/etc/defaultrouter) it should list the ip of the gateway you are using. also netstat -rm will show you the default router you are using

Reply: (edit)There are 3 files you need to check, /etc/defaultrouter which specifies the IP of the gateaway machine, /etc/resolv.conf indicating DNS servers, and /etc/nsswitch.conf make sure the dns is in the hosts: entry hosts: xfn nisplus dns [NOTFOUND=return] files

Reply: (edit)sounds like you guys need to add a default route to your machines. command: route add default $GATEWAY where $GATEWAY='the gateway router or proxy or nt box as a router/gateway ip address'
