Hi, i recnetly purchased a sun machine so i could learn more about UNIX.

And i need to know which files i need to edit for this machine to work on my home network. So i was wondering if someone could tell me or point me to a good tutorial on how to do so.

Thanks

Hi.

What sort of functionality do you want?

All you need to do is make sure your Sun machine's NIC has an IP address assigned that is in the same subnet as the other machines on your network. Connect the machine to your hub and you should be able to telnet in and out of the sun box.

If you want to share files with PCs then you will need to look at installing Samba, unless you don't mind using FTP.

add your other machines into /etc/hosts to be able to telnet etc to them by an easily memorised name.

If you need to access the internet via your network then that needs a few other things done. Perhaps reply and say exactly what you're trying to do?

Cheers

To change the IP of your nic card
if your nic card is called hme0 or elxl0
# ifconfig elxl0 192.168.1.1

To change hostname
# hostname (hostname) or modify the /etc/hosts and /etc/nodename

##To Change IP
-edit /etc/hosts (assuming hme0)
+192.168.0.4 hostname

-echo hostname > /etc/hostname.hme0

That will make changes active on reboot, to change w/o rebooting
ifconfig hme0 down
ifconfig hme0 unplumb
ifconfig hme0 plumb 192.168.0.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255 up

### To change hostname
Fix hostname in -
/etc/nodename
/etc/hosts
/etc/net/ticlts/*
/etc/net/ticots/*
/etc/net/ticotsord/*

-Brett

To have the unix box keep its hostname when using dhcp. check this link out.

http://www.rite-group.com/consulting/solaris_dhcp.html

There is a link in this page for a script you can set up in /etc/init.d with an rc2.d link. This page is easy to follow to set up the dhcp. The script worked for me. (running sparc5,sol2.6)

I still have not found a way to get the windows machines to know the hostname of the sun though...

Howdy, I too have recently bought a Sun machine with Solaris 8.

I've got TCP/IP working, ie I can ping, telnet other machines etc on my network.

I've set ip IPMASQUERADING on a Linux machine which I use to connect to the internet.

What do I have to do to my Solaris box to have it look at access the internet through this machine ?

Thanks in advance, Damian.
