humm , don't know where to start but i'm gonna make this simple as possiable for you guys hope someone out there can help me out .
i'm new at Solaris , i installed solaris 8 after last week by my self , during the installation i rememer something about the hostname , i named my sun box (solaris) i configuerd my sun machine to use DHCP but the when i type hostname i get unknown , i found my way on how to change that by going to init.d/network and change the word unknown with the new name which is Viper.
now when i type hostanem i get viper , and on the login screen i get Viper , but when i try to telnet from my windows machine to viper , it doesn't connect , but when i telnet to Solaris it works fine , i know that you guys might say ok why don't you telnet to the ip address , yes that way it workd , but i want to make sure everything is no more solaris and is Viper , please help Thanks in advance

Have a look at these files for hostname issues:

/etc/nodename -
contains just the hostname

/etc/hosts -
contains IP, hostname, alias(optional) FQDN

Also, do an 'ls' on this

ls /etc/hostname.*

These files exist for each NIC in your system. Your primary interface should have the hostname in that file. Additional interfaces should be named like viper01-h1
or something.

To avoid any confusion or avoid touching
any system conf. files...
best is: issue command
# /usr/sbin/sys-unconfig

It will automatically unconfigure all the
hostname, ip-addr.... so on
and will reboot...
rest information you can specify at boot
which it automatically asks for...

Then you are fresh as morning...

You can't see it because it's not participating on the windows network. I bet you if you browse your network netighborhood you wont see it either.

You have two choices. 1. add viper to your windows computer host file or 2. install and configure SAMBA on the solaris server.

Samba will make it show up in the windows network. However, samba is a bit tricky to configure if you want to create network shares like in windows. For what you need, you just have to configure it to show up on the network.

Hope this helps.
