Here are the details and what I am seeing:
My new PC P4/1.9Ghz (trying to install Solaris 8, release 2/02):
The system:
- performs POST
- displays a brief message that reads, "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: no emulation" (note: only Installation CD is in the PC...am not using floppy Device Configuration Assistant at this stage)
- boots from the CD where the Device Configuration Assistant does its job (note: no "!" indicating device conflicts.
- I choose CD to boot the Solaris kernel
- Message on the screen says "Starting Solaris Webstart" installation has started (refering to pci@0,0/pci-ide@1f/ide@1/sd@0,0:a above the message)
- Then I see "Configuring /dev and /devices for about 2 min.
- Then I see "Using RPC bootparams for network configuration and information (for about 3 seconds).
- Then a bunch of information is quickly written to the screen and then the system reboots before I can even read it. That's where it ends. The Hardware Compatability List was strictly adhered to during the build of this new system, with the exception of the CD-ROM. (The HCL does not list a Sony CDU-5211 model which I am using). There is no OS on this system right now. It is brand new!
Can you help me out? I don't know what is preventing me from getting the installation menu options. Thanks.

Hi,
I am also getting the same error while doing solaris 8 installation. If you are succed in this do tell me. Hardware is P4 with 40Gb HDD have Cdrom , floppy drive.
Thanks

have you tried booting from disc 2 instead of disc 1? i have encountered several problems (with perfectly good hardware) when using the boot floppy or the first disc for installation.

I spoke with a tech guy from Sun. He said:
1) most installations hang after the "Configuring /dev and /devices" stage because of the NIC (even if its on the HCL). He got me to remove it and everything proceeded as it should.2) The better installation method is to use the CD labeled Disk 1 of 2, not the Installation CD that contains Webstart. Booting with that Disk (Disk 1 of 2) will save some headaches down the road. I'll take him at his word.
Good luck and add the NIC after the installation is complete. Don't forget to change the CMOS to select the Hard Disk as the boot device.
