OS: Solaris 5.6
CPU/Ram: Ultra 1
Comment:

I have tried to upgrade from Solaris 5.6 to 5.8 several times and never was able to get the network working after the upgrade. The first time I was doing it on a Sun Ultra 60. I just started a new install on an Ultra 1 from CD one more time and noticed the alert:
(That what happens when you multi-task. You sometimes miss things.)

Notice: The firmware on this system does not support the 64-bit OS. Please upgrade to at least the following version:

OBP 3.11.1 1997/12/03 15:55

Notice: 64-bit OS installed, but 32-bit OS is the default for the processor on the system.

Does anyone have any comments on this? It sounds like I need to get a newer firmware update and then maybe the built-on network adaptor will work with Solaris 5.8. It works fine with Solaris 5.6. Any comments would be appreciated on how to upgrade the firmware. I will also check with Sunsolve to see what their site says.

Thank you in advance if you do have any comments.

So I upgraded the firmware but that did not help. Even when I boot to CDROM I get the message:

le0: No Carrier - cable disconnected or hub link test disabled?

I can boot this machine with Solaris 2.6 with no problem. Le0 works fine with 2.6 and I can get on the network. Try to go to 2.8 and I get the above problem. This problem is not unique to this machine. I have tried on two others and they all have the same problem. Maybe I should try a different CDROM. Thanks for the suggestion, Bernie, I will give it a try.

I guess updating the firmware worked. I still get the following the message when I boot from CDROM and I think that is normal according to the documentation.

le0: No Carrier - cable disconnected or hub link test disabled?

If I ignore this and continue to installing Solaris 8 the network adaptor works and I can get to the network. To the best of my knowledge before updating the firmware the network adaptor just would not funcion.
