Trying to install Solaris 10 x86 on a whitebox.

Install seemed to go ok, but never asked me for network info beyond the host name (as FC does, for example). That seemed odd, but figured there must be a manual way to do this. However, haven't been able to either find a way to manually configure, nor can I figure out which device in /dev is my ethernet controller (which is on motherboard).

Have had this machine up on FC3 happily on the network, so I know it works.

Have tried sys-unconfig, and never get asked for domain / IP Address / etc.

ifconfig -a shows only lo0.

Doing prtconf -pv gives me:

Node 0x1c7f58:

Aside from apparently being an ethernet controller, I don't know what that all means.

Any clues as to how to make this box talk on the network?

It looks like your NIC is a VIA Rhine, so you'll need the rh driver.

Build it, install, then you may or may not need to "drvconfig -i rh", "devfsadm -i rh". Finally, "ifconfig rh0 plumb" and ifconfig as desired. To configure it for DHCP on future boots, touch "/etc/hostname.rh0" and "/etc/dhcp.rh0". A static IP would be configred in the hostname file, I think.

Solaris mostly bypass the RTL8139 NIC model.

Although Patches are available to built with kernel for those unsupported cards, But i think best way to use 3com , Intel Express pro and some other supported models according to Sun HCL and do sys-unconfig
