is SunOS5.8 = Solaris 8?

Pretty much, yep. The SunOS thing dates back a while, it used to just refer to the UNIX OS, however, now you get the UNIX OS + the Windowing system, the whole shebang is referred to as "Solaris".

Solaris 1.X == SunOS 4.X
Solaris 2.X == SunOS 5.x
Solaris 7 == SunOS 5.7
Solaris 8 == SunOS 5.8
