Comment:

What is the shut down procedure for a SPARC 5
work station. Will a message appear giving a OK to shut down? Thanks.

Hi J. Diaz,

There are 2 methods to shutdown a Solaris Machine either use the 'init' command or 'shutdown' command.

The Syntax for init command is:
#init 5

But the better way to shutdown a Solaris machine is by using 'Shutdown' command.
The syntax is:
#shutdown -y -g10 -i5

'-y' is used to bypass the confirmation for shutdown. If u dont use -y u'll be prompted to continue the shutdown porcess after 60 seconds.

'-g(grace period)' is used to specify the time to wait before the system is shut down. Defualt is 60 seconds.

-i(init state) gives u the option to select the init state. Default is Single User mode but u can use '5' to power off the system.

If u r using a SPARC machine then u wont get any message like "OK to shut down". The above command directly powers off ur machine

If u r using a Intel based machine u get a message "Type Any Key To Continue", when u press a key it restarts ur PC.

Rgds,
ABDUL.

the shutdown script actually runs "init" after performing a few sanity checks and so forth.
