Hi. I recently installed Solaris 8x86 so I am pretty new to the entire Solaris thing. I'm trying to setup my Solaris box so that it will be the host for my two other window machines. But currently, I can't seem to even get the Solaris box on the net.
I bought two smc 1255TX network cards (its not on the Solaris HCL, but I found a site that had its drivers for Solaris). Both of these are installed. When I boot up, the ethernet interface for these two cards is afe0 and afe1. Currently I'm only using the afe0 network card (the one that is hooked up to the cable modem) to test if I can even access the net with the Solaris machine. I log in as root and do the following to set up dhcp:1) touch /etc/dhcp.afe0 2) cp /dev/null /etc/hostname.afe0 3) touch /etc/notrouter 4) cp /dev/null /etc/defaultrouter 5) cp /dev/null /etc/resolv.conf 6) edit /etc/nsswitch.conf and change the line that says "hosts: blah blah blah" to "hosts: files dns"
after I do these things, I reboot the machine. While it is booting, I see a message about afe0 is primary dhcp server (or something like that). I login as root and do a "ifconfig -a" and i see two ips: one is the loopback ip and the other is the ip I got via dhcp. However, I still can't access any webpages. Netscape tells me to check my name servers. I thought that the dhcp client was suppose to add some entries into the /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/defaultrouter files after i rebooted...but they are both empty when I check them.
I know my cable service provider (Optimum Online) uses dhcp because my windows machine access the net via dhcp settings. I don''t know I'm doing wrong or missing. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

You're doing everything right as far as i know...
I wasn't able to get the solaris box to populate the /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/defaultrouter entries...
I'd suggest manually entering those items...
I was only able to get dhcp to give an ip address and not even a hostname...
it always came back with unknown as the hostname...

I solved the hostname problem thanks to this website:
http://www.rite-group.com/consulting/solaris_dhcp.html
You basically write a script to re-assign the hostname you want.
But *I* have a problem I'm hoping you can help me with. I'm trying to connect to my ComCast cable providor via my Sun Ultra 5 running Solaris 8 2/02. I have everything set up as "solaris newb" suggests (and what is suggested on the above webpage) but I get a interface configuration error from OpenBoot telling me that ifconfig has a bad address for my interface, hme0. I had done a sys-unconfig prior to all of this (blindly thinking that the default configuration scripts would carry me through).
What do I need to do to fix this?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I'm going to answer my own question here... courtesy of a previous post to this newsgroup:
Unplug the cable modem, then plug it in and reboot...
It's the stupidest things that make the biggest difference.
Mike

Could you let everyone know which the site where one can find solaris driver for smc 1255TX network cards
thnx
