root password recovery

An incindent occurred ( not by me) that resulted in the root password not being accepted. On servers with a cdrom the process to correct is easy enough but has had anyone done it without the cdrom. My only thought is to remove the system disks and mount on another system and change the shadow file - but this a last straw.

I would say the option you mentioned is the only way. Since you said the CD-ROM method is no good, I take it that installing an external CD-ROM (if you have a SCSI available) is out of the question also. Installing the HD in another system would not be that hard and wouldn't really take any longer that the CD-ROM method.
