pipe comand. wrong keyboard?!?!

ok so ive got solaris installed and ive dived into the terminal to type stuff but i couldnt uses the pipe comand which looks like | The keybaord is fine and working and sloaris understands a key has been pressed because the mouse cursor disapears just i dont get any output on the terminal. the keyboard is a english uk 105 layout i think. whys this not working?

all text needs typos. There there for the reader to find,to distract them from the total lack of content. google it! wasnt the answer to the question i asked so dont be dense and give me that reply!
