NIC fails to initialise (newbie)

Comment:
I am having trouble with getting a realtek NIC to initialise automatically. I can maually initialise the NIC as follows:
ifconfig rtls0 192.168.0.42 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
I have created hostname.rtls0 and have altered the hosts and netmasks files to the appropriate settings (I'm pretty sure). When the computer is restarted (as is sometimes necessary) the interface is plumbed and gets the appropriate ip address and netmask assignened. However, the interface is never brought UP?
This is a very frustrating situation and any help would be greatly appreciated!
