I have 2 SUN Netra T1's. I have the root password for one machine(MC1) but do not have any passwords for the second machine(MC2).Here are the configurations:
MC1:
---
Sun OS 5.8
DISK: disk0 , disk1
CDROM: YESMC2:
---
Sun OS 5.7
DISK: disk0
CDROM: YES
Access: By connecting Serial A LOM to the PC and running TeraTerm or Hyperterminal.
The data in MC2 is not important. We had bought both the boxes from e-bay a year back. I just need to be able to get in and be able to use the box.I just dont know how to proceed as I am not very familiar with Solaris. But I did come up with a few general approaches. I am not sure how sensible and feasible each one is. Any help will be appreciated.
Option 1:
--------
Network both MC1 and MC2. Interrupt MC2 when it boots and get it to the OK prompt. Boot MC2 from MC1 and to get into MC2.Once inside change the password file to reset root's password.I have connected NET0 of both machines using Ethernet Cable. I donot know what I need to change in MC1 to get the network going. I get the "Link Down - cable problem?" message when both the boxes boot. I have the Ethernet Address of both the boxes. MC2 when it boots sets the netmask to 255.255.255.192. Using this information is it possible to make MC1 visible to MC2 and get MC2 to boot from MC1?
Even if I boot MC2 from MC1, is it possible to get in without knowing the current root password for MC2?
Option 2:
--------
Physically connect disk0 of MC1 to the disk1 bay of MC2. Boot MC2 from disk1. Once inside change the password file of MC2 to reset root's password. Both the boxes are lying next to me and I have the tops open. I donot see very many screws. I donot know how good of an idea it is to physically remove the disk from one machine and connect it to the other without damaging the systems.
Option 3:
--------
Buy the Solaris OS CD($50?) from SUN and boot and install the Operating system from CDROM. I assume when I install the operating system I would get to set the new root password. It would be great if anyone could tell me if any of these options are practical or if I need to do something else to get into the box.
--Thanks

To boot a machine over the network, the host machine needs to be set as a jumpstart server. This is done with the OS CDs. You can download the ISO images of Solaris 8 or Solaris 9 from Sun without a charge and burn your own CDs. If you interupt the boot process on the machine you want to wipe, type "boot cdrom" after you insert the install CD. It will present you with an easy install and allow you to set the password.
