What is the maximun number of files in Solaris 8 with in a directory?
I have a very large number of files and if I use ls command the system makes a segmentation fault and it is unable to display file list

as far as i'm aware, ufs has a maximal file count for the whole file system (this maximum number depends on the size of the partition and the number of inodes allocated during the format), therefore being located in one directory or another is irrelevent...
if you are unwilling or unable to reorganize the files into more manageable chunks, you might try using gnu ls in place of the stock ls... i'm not sure if it would handle the problem, but it might be worth a try.
gnu ls is installed as part of the gnu file utils package, available here:
