Here's a pretty picture.
What needs to be fixed to get the local LAN dns to work correctly? MY linksys gateway on a ADSL internet doesn't not specify a domain properly. I can access the internet, ping website, nslookup give forward and reverse hostname, but the LAN hostnames does not work I.E: I can ping computers, but can't there hostnames or resolve their IP to a hoistname.

I have set up static as follows:
resolv.conf
domain dsl-verizon.net
nameserver 4.2.2.4
nameserver 4.2.2.5
nameserver 4.2.2.6
nssswitch.conf
hosts: files dns
defaultrouter
192.168.1.1
hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.225 ancient

my network is on DHCP 192.168.1.x and subnet 255.255.255.0 and the nameservers are from the ADSL on verizon network given to the Linksys router.
I can get samba working right in network neighbor hood and other computers can ping my hostname and get ip lookup ok. WTF. Anyclues?

I also tried DHCP configurations, but still the same problem. IS it that router not providing an apporpriate domain?

Hello

Just could you clarify your post?
Is it that you want to see the hosts on your network to be seen by the real world?

or are you also trying to setup your own domain,

i.e. ancient.mydomain.com

Well, I am just trying to get nslookup to return proper results. I want to be able to ping local hosts on my LAN by hostname. It seems that the response comes back as "unknown host". I figure this problem could propagate into other applications on my solaris machine when trying to connect to local computers by hostname, and not IP. That's it. Internet works by IP and hostnames "DNS", but not local computer name. For instance...
(shynmuyo = 192.168.1.112 on LAN)
nslookup 192.168.1.112 or
nslookup shynmuyo
no sever name for 192.168.1.1 nonexistant host/domain
however...
ping 192.168.1.112
192.168.1.112 is alive
ping shynmuyo
unknown host
How do I fix? Is this problem with the Linksys route (192.168.1.1)>?
