Jumpstart Problem.

I think I'm probably missing something really simple but could use someones help in seeing it. I'm fairly new to Solaris.

I have 20 Sun Ultra30 SPARC II machines to get installed and running. All on the same subnet so this shouldn't be so difficult. I've installed one of the machines as the jumpstart boot/install/config server. I've done a very simple configuration at the moment to just try and get this to work. The rules file checks OK. All the daemons needed are running - nfsd/tftpd/bootparmad/rarpd . Adding the client with the proper -escp flags is not a problem, all are sun4u .

The problem comes when I initiate the 'boot net - install' command at the OK prompt. The machines (I'm testing 3) all come back with
'Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet' at least once which I think might be normal. Then '2ae00', sits there for a while then appears to be accessing the install directory on the jumpstart server because I get the same info 'Solaris 5.8.....' as if installing from CD. Then a bunch of hex numbers flash too fast to read which I understand is normal as this is suppose to be the kernel info downloading. Then the machine reboots and comes back up with the 'boot' command and boots normally into the previous install.

These machines were previously loaded with configurations using jumpstart from the donors that gave us the machines. (I work for a University).

Any suggestions? Do I need to format these machines to clear the memory since they've been loaded with jumpstart before? I know I do this when changing Windows OSes but I figured Solaris was a bit more efficient on this. Thanks for any help.

Hai..

As u mentioned ,I think u would have configured everything correctly..

Did u congigured NIS,if not u have to create # sysidcfg file in which u will have the entries..

SYSTEM_LOCALE=C
TIME ZONE=GMT+5
NAME-SERVICE=NONE
ROOT-PASSWORD=NONE
LANGUAGE=EN_US
NETWORK-INTERFACE=HME0,LE0(DEPENDS)

share this file also.

after that u give
./add-install-client -e(ethernet address of client) -i (ipaddress) -s servername -c (sysidcfg file)

ur error may be due to ethernet address not found and it is not pinging.

Kumar,

Thanks, I do not have NIS configured but I do have the sysidcfg file configured and all directories are shared.

You wrote - …. I initiate the 'boot net - install' command at the OK prompt. The machines (I'm testing 3) all come back with 'Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet'

It simply indicates that the jumpstart server could not resolve RARP requests of the clients by assigning ip addresses.

Make sure that you have /etc/ethers file populated with “Ethernet address & corresponding hostnames” and /etc/inet/hosts populated with “those hostnames with corresponding ip addresses”

Than to add a client issue: ./add_install_client -s server:path -c server:path -p server:path client_name platform_group

You do not need to type ethernetaddress and ipaddress every time you add a client.

Hope this would help.
