I am new to Solaris and recently installed solaris 8 on my ultra 5. I downloaded the new java 1.4 and want to install it on my system. My question is do i just install it or do I need to delete the older versions on the system and if so , which particular files?
Thanks guys!

Hi,
You don't have to uninstall the older versions of java. If you want to use the interpreter as the 'system default' then change the link (java) in /usr to point to java1.4 (actually I think the packages install as java1.4beta3 or something weird like that). When something calls for java, or you do explicitly by typing java, then the 1.4 java will be used. How does it work? There is a link in /bin named java. It points to /usr/java/bin/java
Remember, /usr/java is a link that points to the correct java version. If you want to use the 1.4 version compiler then you need to set your path appropriately.
Good Luck.
